Lord of the Rings (1978)

Pretty tough. And oddly redundant, if you've seen the live action ones. The later people must have directly drawn from the earlier. Some scenes are too similar, especially the prelude, which isn't even in the book.

This single-film version is laughably rushed. I thought the trilogy was, the first time I saw it -- incomprehensible even -- well this is even more so. So what's the point of it? Surreal entertainment for children with no hope of grasping a single of its depths? Just a curiosity for superfans? Certainly not an attempt at a quality movie.

1978 isn't even that long ago. Based on the animation and storytelling, you'd think this was made in the 30s.

I only watched a bit of it.

Ok I skimmed through it all now. It's laughably rushed but for a few confusing scenes. For example, the flight to the ford is unhinged, drawn out, and awesome. Helm's Deep takes a while. The hybrid-animation stuff is infinitely cooler than the cartoon. Compare the Nazgul or the orcs with Sam. The animation style is different, and the level of artistry isn't comparable. There are some actually inspiring scenes with the dark forces, in that hybrid style, while every scene of light characters is consistently silly. The movie entirely shines in the darkness and fails in the light.

The Jackson movies did a good job of taking some inspiration from here without being too biased. That's not an easy psychological process.
